Research is the fastest path to ending cancer. And, we are fortunate to have Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, one of the top cancer research institutes in the world, right here in our community. Every day, our scientists are inspired by the hope of finding the next big breakthrough that may lead to cancer cures.
That said, government funding for cancer research has been flat in recent years but the incidence of cancer keeps growing, making the need for donations from our community more important than ever. As a nonprofit organization, Fred Hutch relies on funding from both the government and from individuals, businesses and foundations to explore cures for all types of cancers.
Obliteride is an exciting way to activate the entire Pacific Northwest community to save lives faster by accelerating innovative "out of the box" solutions to find cures. Donations from our community give our scientists the freedom to create and explore some of the most innovative, lifesaving breakthroughs that often cannot be funded by government grants alone.
Support Obliteride, because every minute counts.
The stories below exemplify the brilliance in our labs today and provide a glimpse of where we can go in the future.
Technologies that blow your mind
Needless to say, brain surgery is highly complex and risky. But, Dr. Jim Olson’s team invented tumor paint to literally light up tumor tissue so that surgeons can more easily remove the cancer while preserving healthy tissue around it. The net? More good, less harm to some of the most critical tissue there is.
Dr. Olson’s team is also transforming his discovery into a new generation of safer cancer drugs, called optides. Optides may offer a new way to kill cancer cells without hurting healthy cells and avoiding deadly side effects. This is the kind of news that cancer fears.
Nature knows best
Imagine your own body fighting any cancer like it does a common cold. Our scientists are pioneering
immunotherapy to aim our immune systems directly at cancer. It’s already saving lives today. Imagine that.
We pick the tough battles
Difficult to detect, and even more difficult to treat, pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers. Not intimidated by this foe, our scientists have discovered how pancreatic tumors protect themselves with a scar-like wall. They’ve also found a way to dissolve that wall. They’re now moving their breakthrough research into the clinic where it could save lives.
